I See Dead People
Posted by: mward on July 1, 2009
Talking about dead celebrities these days is as profound as complaining about the heat, or letting passersby know that you occasionally enjoy the Outer Banks by placing a clever sticker on your rear windshield.
You don't need me to blog a requiem for Wacko Jacko, infomercial guy and crazy blondie. We have "Inside Edition" and "Entertainment Tonight" to do that for us.
Instead, we'll look at some of their most random screen moments.
Michael Jackson / "The Wiz" (1978)
This is where Jacko dressed up as a scarecrow and danced around with Diana Ross and Nipsey Russell while destroying an American classic. Can you imagine the outcry if I told you that the cast from "The '70s Show" was going to redo "Do the Right Thing??!!" The funny thing is that "The Wiz" is now passing for nostalgia, as its popularity is up more than 1,000% on movie website IMDB.com.
Farrah Fawcett / "The Red-Light Sting" (1984)
America's last (and late) pin-up beauty starred alongside Beau Bridges in this made-for-TV soap opera about lawyers, hookers and cops. Good luck finding it on Netflix. The bombshell juiced all she could from one season on a so-so TV show more famous for hair and curvy silhouette. Farrah really is the Pamela Anderson of our generation, except not quite as good an actress.
Billy Mays / Hercules Hook
The bearded, blue-shirted giant is a sales god to airport kiosk clerks and aspiring inventors. He made Ron Popeil lose sleep - and he hadn't even hit his peak. Dominating the programming from midnight to 4 a.m., my favorite Mays gadget was the Hercules Hook, a doo-dad so strong Mays needed to summon the inspiration of the great Greek heavweight. In the spellbounding infomercial, not even Mays himself and a hundred horses were strong enough to defeat the Hercules Hook. Despite this defeat, I still firmly believe Mays will arm-wrestle the devil and buy his way out of Hades so he can fulfill his destiny by selling us a windshield wiper fluid that doubles as a yummy smoothie.
Thank you for entertaining us, Jacko, Farrah and Billy. You are gone, but not forgotten - yet - thanks to reruns and crazy European fans.
Check out "Screen Scene" twice a week for what's hot (and not) on the big screen and small screen. Listen to Mike Thursdays at 4:05 p.m. on WRVA 1140AM.
