I heard "Nights of the Week" by
Apes and Androids and was intrigued enough to tap their name down on the ol' iPhone notepad. I listened to them when I got home on their
myspace. Apes make insanely inventive sound and remind me a little of Justin Hawkins and
the Darkness (remember that hit they had, "I Believe In A Thing Called Love"? - Justin is now in a band called
Hot Leg, p.s.).
I mentioned
fun a few weeks ago. They'll be opening for
Manchester Orchestra next week. Anyway, they have a new single out called
"At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used to Be)". If this reminds you at all of
the Format, you're onto something. Format called it quits and now 2 out of 3 are members of
fun. See them live Apr. 24 at the National.
Ever since I picked up a copy of
( ) by
Sigur Ros back in college (I liked the CD cover) I've been in love with their haunting sound. And since their lyrics are mostly Icelandic, it's fun to make up my own words to the songs. Sigur frontman Jon por Birgisson and his partner, Alex Somers, make up another band I enjoy,
Riceboy Sleeps. They recently featured a track called "Happiness" on the
Dark Was the Night compilation, which I've had on heavy rotation since I got it in my hot little hands. Anyway, Riceboy Sleeps just released two new singles, "Daniell in the Sea" and "All the Big Trees" - you can see videos for both
here on Spin.com. Warning: do NOT listen to these while driving, as sleeping may ensue.
Snag a free copy of the
Dirty Projectors newest single, "Stillness Is the Move"
here. You can also listen to another new DP song, "Remade Horizon"
here. They take liberties with the English Language that just make the words sound so much more interesting than their original versions. I'm loving this stuff. Reminder: They're opening for
TV on the Radio at the National June 10.
It's Christmas in April! Many thanks to Aquarium Drunkard for offering up this

We've been talking about this album for months, it's finally out.
Metric's
Fantasies. More info
online here.
Death Cab for Cutie has released a five-song EP called
The Open Door ... these are songs they felt just didn't fit onto their latest full studio release,
Narrow Stairs. Hear "Little Bribes" on their
myspace.
Silversun Pickups, the band that brought you "Lazy Eye" and "Little Lovers So Polite" are back with a new album called
Swoon. Listen to the catchy new "Panic Switch" and the rest of
Swoon on their
myspace.
L.A. band
Dengue Fever's DVD/CD
Sleepwalking Through the Mekong is out. Catch these guys Saturday at the Plaza Bowl and visit their
myspace for a sampling of their multi-cultural and distinctive sound.
Ida Maria's just as talented and witty as fellow UK-er
Lily Allen and she proves it with "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" and "Oh My God" from
Fortress Around My Heart. Preview them on her
myspace. She's got a pleasantly strong Erika Wennerstrom-ish voice.
Marissa Nadler's highly reviewed
Little Hells is out now. "Ghosts & Lovers," like the subject of its lyrics, will "haunt you for a while" - in a "hurts so good" kinda way.
Hear it online.
Before things get too serious around here ...
The Mummers' delightfully quirky
Tale to Tell is also out this week. Lead singer Raissa is a little Bjork sans the whole creepy vibe. Mummers on
myspace.
