Sonic Youth, big band dancing, Busta Rhymes and Biz Markie, plus sushi and sake tastings...it's all this week.
Sonic Youth
Punk rock superstars Sonic Youth visit The National on Wednesday. The hardcore punk rockers set the indie scene on fire in the '80s and have been trailblazers ever since. Expect young ones, old ones and everybody in between.
Sushi-O Sake Tasting
Sushi and sake on a hot summer night. Does it get any better? On Wednesday, Sushi-O will be having a Sake wine tasting hosted by Mike Kotrady of Kysela Wine. The tasting will feature five styles of sake and five petite food parings. $25 per person. Call 897-9878 for reservations.
Thoroughly Modern Millie
Jazz hands and flapper skirts, it’s the roaring twenties, and small town Millie Dillmount arrives in New York to see how the other half lives, but what starts out as a bold declaration of her independence turns into a whirlwind of money, romance, kidnapping and tap-dancing stenographers. "Thoroughly Modern Mille" won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2002. Presented by Barksdale Theatre at the Empire. Read the review on TimesDispatch.com.
Appalachian Music Riot - O'death, James Menefee (River City High), and Dean Lee & the Unwelcome Guest
It's a p-rock marathon at Plaza Bowl this Friday with three bands for the price of one: O'Death, James Menefee from River City High, and Dean Lee & the Unwelcome Guest. Plus, as always, duck pin bowling.
Friday's at Sunset: Busta Rhymes
'90s rapper Busta Rhymes visits Richmond for Fridays at Sunset. You may remember his string of hits including "What's It Gonna Be?!" and "Dangerous." Biz Markie, of the ever infamous and off-key "Just a Friend," opens.
Big Band Dancing At The 17th Street Farmer's Market
This is a new event and sounds like fun. Move your twinkle toes down to the 17th Street Farmer's Market on Friday, for Big Band Dancing. Joe Enroughty And His Royal Virginians will be playing big band music, along with vocals by Cathy Saydlowski.
It's a free concert and if you're a big band fan (you know who you are), you'll recognize several golden oldies such as "Sing, Sing, Sing," "In The Mood," "Little Brown Jug," and many more. There will be plenty of seating and the city plans to set up a dance floor in front of the bandstand. Free.
